Choosing your Wesley Allen Iron Bed
1. Choose a bed style:
Most likely, you already know what size you are looking for, i.e. Twin, Full, Queen, King, and California King, so the next step is to decide on the style and design attributes. Although this is very individual choice, remember these beds are built to last for decades! You will have this bed for years and years and will probably pass it on to your children. So you may want to look at more transitional styles that will work with a variety of bedroom furniture designs. Among American metal bed manufacturers, Wesley Allen has a more transitional appeal, with beds that can be "fashion forward" with traditional elements at the same time. One example of this fusion of elements is the popular Quati Bed, which has flowing lines but very old-style rounded finials. Of course, Wesley Allen also has some superb designs that are clearly rooted in traditional iron bed configurations, but with some modern updates. An example of this is the Laurel Bed, shown at right, which features a delicate garden theme with intricate leaves and cascading lines and an overall appeal that transcends tradition.
Another factor that will enter your decision is the kind of iron bed you want. Wesley Allen beds are all equally sturdy, of course, so is about personal preference. Do you want a bed with minimal design, or one with lots of scrolls and detail? If you want a bed that is comfortable to read in, perhaps you want an upholstered bed. Wesley Allen now offers some incredible upholstered beds, such as the Veneto, Kent, and York beds.
2. Choose an iron bed configuration:
When we talk about "configurations", we mean bed models that use the same style in a variety of bed designs, such as canopy, wrap, open toe and half canopy (or “bonnet” beds). Wesley Allen metal beds are truly unique in that a typical model can have up to ten configurations for one particular model. One of the most popular beds, the Interlude, has a different personality for each of the configurations. See our Technical Information page for images of the various bed configurations for Wesley-Allen Beds. For most buyers, the question is one of how much room they have to work with and how prominent a space they want their bed to occupy. Canopy beds produce a singular presence, resulting in an impressive centerpiece for the bedroom. Complete beds blend in more with the surrounding decor, and "Headboard Only" configurations almost serve as a backdrop within the entire spectrum of the bed. The surrounding bedroom furniture influence both the allowable size of the bed as well as the allowable dimensions (for example, if you have a small guest bedroom with a nightstand, chest of drawers, and a few other furnishings, you may not want to put in an imposing canopy bed. A headboard might be a better choice).
3. Choose a finish:
Wesley Allen has an array of beautiful finishes to complement their beds: Standard, Custom, Two-tone, and Textured finishes. Click here to view the full palette of available Wesley Allen Finishes. The Standard Finishes are quite rich and certainly work well with any bed you choose. Some of the Standard finishes are two-layered, such as the warm, inviting Golden Brown, or the dynamic-looking Silver Beige. Of course, longtime favorites Natural Rust and Black Suede are also part of this group. The Custom Finish group includes multi-layered finishes that require more handwork. Each finish is hand-applied, layer upon layer, to create a rich-looking iron creation. Some of our favorites include Weathered Cedar, Aged Stone, and Silver Nugget. One of the most popular Custom finishes, which you will see on a lot of beds on our site, is Aged Bronze. This finish has bronze and black color palettes mixed in with a bit of verdegris antiquing. These are absolutely stunning interpretations using finish combinations such as Brass and Mocha, Copper and Black, and Silver and Mocha. Due to the extremely complex nature of the two-tone finishes, they are only available on certain models, such as the stately Regal Bed and the transitional Chelsea Bed and Fillmore Bed. Lastly, Wesley Allen has introduced some Textured Finishes, which add another dimension of depth to the finish, making the bed seem more than ever like a work of art. Textured Patina is one of our favorites, with an ancient look of a Greek or Roman statue.
